Willy Joseph Cancel left behind a seven-month-old son and wife, to help Ukrainian soldiers in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Willy Joseph Cancel, an American citizen, and a Marine veteran died fighting alongside Ukrainian soldiers in Ukraine, according to his widow, who spoke to Fox News Digital early Friday morning.
“My husband did die in Ukraine,” Brittany Cancel the widow of the marine told Fox News “He went there wanting to help people, he had always felt that that was his main mission in life.“
Leaving behind a 7-month-old son and wife, Cancel is the first U.S citizen to die in the war in Ukraine alongside Ukrainian soldiers. Cancel’s bravery and the manifestation of compassion are admirable, and Willy’s selfless sacrifice in the service of others is a prime example of how humanity transcends all wars.
“My husband was very brave and a hero,” Brittany Cancel said. “I did not expect to be a widow at 23 years old or for our son to be without a father. All I want is for him to come home, and to give him the proper burial he deserves.“
Willy arrived in Poland on March 12 and crossed the border into Ukraine between March 12 and March 13. Willy Cancel’s mother, Rebecca Cabrera, told CNN that Willy signed up to work for a private military contracting company on top of his full-time job as a Correctional officer shortly before Putin declared war on Ukraine. The corporation requested contractors to fight in Ukraine after the war broke out, and Cancel agreed to go.
Willy’s wife revealed “Prior to wanting to help the effort in Ukraine, he was a detention officer in Kentucky, He had dreams and aspirations of being a police officer or joining FDNY. Naturally, when he found out about what was happening in Ukraine he was eager to volunteer.”
