It’s been over a month now since the controversial season finale where Lewis Hamilton was just short of creating history but eventually lost to the young gun Max Verstappen. With the last moment safety car decision Michael Masi has made Formula One’s one of the most controversial decisions. Lewis who was on a hunt for his record-breaking 8th World Champion title was left inconsolable whereas Max was thirsty for his maiden World Champion title drenched in all the glory.
But was this season finale really conscientious to both the drivers? Damon Hill in his interview with Sky Sports F1 recalled the season finale as “unsatisfactory”.
He spoke about how both Lewis’ and Max’s camps had different opinions about the result. He said that Lewis’ camp and fans felt that they were “wronged” whereas the Dutch felt the decision was satisfactory.
Damon Hill went on to talk about how the decision to allow only certain cars to un-lap themselves in order to bring in the title competition into contention was unfair to other teams. He spoke about how Masi’s decision was influenced by the team Principals.
With the decision still pending and a final call from FIA still awaited we still don’t know what will be the outcome of the inquiry. With reports of Michael Masi’s position at risk, we know that the noose is tight at the moment on his neck. Mercedes trying to put pressure from all sides to bring Masi down.
