Atletico Madrid VS Real Madrid, Copa Del Rey

“Epic Comeback”: Atletico Madrid Triumphs Over Real Madrid 4-2 in Extra Time, Secures Copa Quarterfinal Spot Following Super Cup Loss

Atletico Madrid advanced to the Copa Del Rey Quarterfinals after defeating Real Madrid 4-2 in the Thursday matchup

Atletico Madrid defeated Real Madrid 4-2 in overtime with two goals from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme. The thrilling match guaranteed Atletico Madrid’s trip to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. After Joselu scored late on after Morata had given the home team the lead once more, and Jan Oblak’s own goal cancelled out Samuel Lino’s first goal, Madrid twice pulled away from Atletico to force overtime.

Griezmann scored a brilliant goal in extra time after breaking through on the right, and Riquelme added a late goal to seal the victory and exact revenge on Atletico Madrid for losing the Spanish Super Cup semifinal 5-3 the previous week.

Match Overview

After some fouls and offsides by Atletico, the Real Madrid team launched an aggressive attack early in the game. The opening ten minutes were marked by continuous rallies, which ended when De Paul of Atletico committed a foul. Two minutes later, Jude Bellingham and Vinícius Júnior of Madrid took back-to-back shot attempts, one of which was blocked and the other missed.

Atletico got its opening goal in the 39th minute, when Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger deflected the ball backwards into the box, setting up Samuel Lino for a goal from close range. The score was equalised later on by a rare error by Atletico goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, who slammed the ball into his own net in an attempt to clear a cross.

In the 57th minute, Álvaro Morata gave Atletico Madrid another lead from close range after Madrid goalie Andriy Lunin was unable to completely clear a cross. After bouncing off Rüdiger, the ball moved in Morata’s direction towards an open net.

In the 80th minute of play, Madrid striker Joselu replaced Rodrygo. Just two minutes into the game, Joselu scored another equaliser for Madrid with a header, making the score 2-2. At this point, the fans were dramatically gasping and clenching their seats.

The game then advanced into the overtime. After bursting through the right side of the area, Antoine Griezmann scored a stunning goal in the 100th minute of play. By edging past Madrid striker Vinícius Júnior, the France international—who now holds the record for most goals scored at Atletico—found the top corner from a tight angle.

It was an amazing goal, probably one of his best,” Madrid coach Diego Simeone said. “We played a very good match and the players gave everything they had against a top opponent. It was a great match.

In the 119th minute, Rodrigo Riquelme sealed the victory for Atletico Madrid with a breakaway from inside the box, assisted by Memphis Depay.
